What Do You Want to Put in Your Pocket?
An invitation to notice what has stood out for you this week.
Hello friends,
Spiritual direction is an agenda free space and I don’t have a formula for how I begin and end sessions. It all depends on how the person is arriving and what comes up for them as we talk.
There are, though, practices and questions that regularly surface. One of those is the question “What do you want to put in your pocket?”
I find myself asking this question at the end of sessions, especially ones in which a lot has been shared and/or noticed. I offer it in the hope that it might help my directee feel into the depths of our conversation for the small and meaningful thing they want to take with them into the next few hours, days or weeks of their life’s journey. That pocket sized thing might be a phrase or an image or an insight. Some nugget of wisdom or insight that will nourish them, perhaps, or a question that they might want to keep turning over and pondering.
As we reach the end of another week together, I invite you to take a couple of minutes to pause and reflect on what’s stood out for you in the passages or your reflections on them this week. Was there a line in one of the passages that stopped you in your tracks? Or did one of the questions stir up something for you?
What do you want to remember?
What do you want to put in your pocket to take with you on the journey ahead?
Last week I enabled Substack’s chat feature and began a thread asking about what had shimmered for you in the passages that week. I was blown away by the thoughtful responses. Thank you.
This week, I’ve started another thread in the same chat where we can share our pocket-sized nuggets of meaning or insight. If you felt comfortable to do so, I’d love to hear yours. As usual, I’ll break the ice and go first.
With love and blessings for a wonderful weekend,
